BACKGROUND AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
Risseeuw Boerdery was established in 1978 in the Marble Hall area by JN Risseeuw (Senior). Soon after the establishment of the business, his three sons, Kobus, Jannie and Gerhard joined the venture, focusing on the growing of tobacco and wheat.
From this, Risseeuw Boerdery Trust was established in 1994 by JN Risseeuw Senior. The business was diversified to involve other commodities, i.e. table grapes, maize, peas, sweet potatoes, tobacco and game.
In order to market and export our own produce, we established Wolwekraal Vrugte Verwerking (Edms) Bpk in 1999. Wolwekraal is the name of the area where we farm and live. The name was an obstacle for overseas clients, therefore we translated the name to English to establish Wolves Den Farming (Pty) Ltd (abbreviated WDF). WDF established healthy relationships with Pick ‘n Pay, Freshmark and various clients outside of South Africa’s borders.
Changing legislation requires adaptation, which led to a change in how we do business. Risseeuw Boerdery Trust led to the emergence of a private company, Risseeuw Boerdery (Pty) Ltd in 2003, with the four Risseeuw’s: Nico, Kobus, Jannie and Gerhard as directors. Currently the company is producing table grapes, sweet potatoes, tobacco, figs, citrus, peas, maize, wheat, butternuts, cattle and game.
The business is divided into five sections, comprised of labour forces and equipment and managed by different section managers. These are:
